Junto à margem do Rio Mersey, Liverpool tem hoje as suas "docas", uma vasta área dedicada à cultura, lazer, restaurantes e bares, comércio, etc.: é a Albert Dock, reconversão de um antigo conjunto de edifícios associados às lides portuárias, actividade na qual a velha urbe foi um marco histórico que a Grã-Bretanha tem bem presente.
Por essas bandas, ao fundo de um relvado amplo que dá pelo nome de Chevasse Park, lá está o monumento mais inesperado de Liverpool: o Yellow Submarine.
Executado em metal, o obelisco pesa 20 toneladas e foi uma das estrelas do International Garden Festival, a partir de 1984, no Otterspool Park, o qual se estendeu até 1997. Ficou depois abandonado e começou a mostrar sinais de corrosão galopante.
Um dia, as autoridades da cidade decidiram aproveitá-lo, dar-lhe a mão, restaurá-lo e levá-lo para um lugar novo. É onde está, desde 24 de Agosto de 2000 – em cima da relva, à boa maneira hippie. De um lado, uma avantajada placa colorida condizente lembra a canção dos Beatles e conta esta curta história do monumento inspirado na célebre longa-metragem musical em desenhos animados.

... so began the imortal opening lines in the Beatles 1966 song
"Yellow Submarine".
The hit record and film inspired fans of all ages - including
apprentices at the world famous Cammell Laird
Shipbuilding yard, on the River Mersey.
From a design by Graham Burgess, the apprentices
built this 20-ton submarine, which is 51 feet long and
made from plate metal, for the Liverpool International
Garden Festival in 1984.
It was transported across the Mersey to the Festival
Garden site at Otterspool where it was one of the main
attractions for millions of visitors.
But, in 1997, the Festival site finally closed and the
Yellow Submarine was left high and dry.
The tide turned when Liverpool City Council stepped in
to rescue the Fab Four's rusting sub and give it a new berth
in the city centre. The Yellow Submarine was first taken to a
council depot where it was repaired and renovated by New
Deal trainees from Liverpool Architecture and Design Trust.
Fully ship-shape, it was re-launched at this site on
August 24th, 2000 for a new generation of Beatles fans.
